Delta Electronics India Implements 6.4 MWh/4 MW BESS for Kolkata Metro Blue Line

Delta Electronics India, a top company that makes smart green and power management solutions, has successfully installed a 6.4 MWh / 4 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the Central Sub-station of Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line. Kolkata Metro is now the first underground metro railway in India to use a large-scale BESS. This will help keep operations running smoothly, save energy, and keep passengers safe during power outages.

The project, which cost INR 20 crore, is expected to pay for itself over the course of 13 to 15 years by saving energy, improving the power factor, and lowering peak demand. The system keeps the tunnel’s ventilation and environment control systems running in case of a power outage or grid failure. It also lets trains with passengers safely get to the nearest station during these times.

Advanced Technology for Reliable Operations

Niranjan Nayak, Managing Director of Delta Electronics India, said,
“The deployment of our Battery Energy Storage System reflects Delta’s vision of enabling safe, resilient, and energy-efficient power solutions for critical public infrastructure across India. We are proud to support Kolkata Metro while demonstrating how our energy storage solutions play a vital role in strengthening India’s urban transport infrastructure, especially by strengthening reliability in underground metro operations where uninterrupted power supply is essential.”

The fully integrated BESS uses Lithium Iron Phosphate battery technology and high-efficiency power electronics to quickly respond to problems on the grid.

Rajesh Kaushal, Vice President of the Energy Infrastructure Business Group at Delta Electronics India, said,”In addition to emergency traction support, the system enables peak power management, power factor improvement, driving sustained operational efficiency. All critical components including the power conversion system, energy management system, and battery racks are designed, developed, and manufactured in-house, ensuring high quality, reliability, and long-term sustainability for such critical applications.”

Supporting India’s Energy Storage Goals

The project fits with the National Program on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage and supports India’s larger goals of improving the infrastructure for energy storage and encouraging environmentally friendly electric transportation in public transportation.

With the inauguration of this BESS, Kolkata Metro sets a benchmark for large-scale battery adoption in underground metro systems, while Delta Electronics India reinforces its leadership in delivering energy-resilient, safety-critical solutions for high-density urban transit networks.
