Edify Energy Launches 185MW / 370MWh Koorangie Battery to Boost Grid Stability in Victoria

Edify Energy’s 185MW / 370 MWh Koorangie Battery Is Now Fully Operational, Strengthening Victoria’s Grid and Enabling More Renewables.

Edify Energy has announced the Koorangie Energy Storage System (KESS) is now fully operational, importing and exporting electricity at its full nameplate capacity to the National Electricity Market (NEM). Located in the Gannawarra region of northwest Victoria, the advanced battery system delivers cleaner, more reliable energy to Victorian consumers.

  • 185 MW / 370 MWh of large-scale energy storage

  • 100 Tesla Megapacks storing enough energy to power 350,000 homes for two hours
  • Owned by Sosteneo SGR Spa on behalf of its clients
  • 20-year System Support Agreement with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)
  • 15-year offtake agreement with Shell Energy
  • Brings together CBA, DNB and BNP Paribas in the provision of a long-term syndicated debt facility
  • Over 520 jobs during peak construction

This landmark asset demonstrates the strength of collaboration in advancing Australia’s energy transition. Through its System Support Agreement with AEMO, KESS provides essential grid stability services and enables up to 300 MW of new renewable generation in the Murray River Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). The long-term offtake agreement advances Shell Energy’s commitment to operational excellence and their investment in firming assets that play a critical role in supporting Australia’s decarbonization and net-zero future.

Developed and delivered by Edify in partnership with world-class contractors, the project supported over 520 construction jobs and 4 full-time operations staff. It is Edify’s third major development in Kerang and the company’s 12th utility-scale energy infrastructure project.

Local engagement with the Kerang community and Gannawarra Shire Council was central to the project’s planning and delivery. The development aligns with the region’s strong commitment to renewable energy, offering long-term community and economic benefits, including lower energy costs, job creation, and local business growth.

Despite its rich wind and solar resources, northwest Victoria has faced grid constraints that limit renewable energy exports. KESS addresses these challenges using Megapacks with Tesla grid-forming inverters, which maintain grid voltage and frequency—services traditionally provided by conventional generators. This technology plays a vital role in stabilizing the network and unlocking the region’s full renewable energy potential.

The Koorangie Energy Storage System is on the traditional land of the Barapa Barapa, Wamba Wamba and Yorta Yorta people, near the town of Kerang. Edify acknowledges the traditional custodians of this land, whose rich culture is deeply connected to the rivers, lagoons, creeks, and wetlands of their nation.
