Battery platform in the UK Eku Energy has put into service two large energy storage facilities totaling 67 MW in Loudwater in Buckinghamshire and Basildon in Essex. These facilities were constructed in collaboration with NHOA Energy, a partner in energy storage systems.
Ancillary and balancing services will be provided by the Loudwater and Basildon battery energy storage systems (BESS) to serve the national grid as well as the local one. They have auxiliary systems and operating infrastructure provided by ESM Power, a balance of plant (BOP) contractor, and battery equipment provided by NHOA Energy.
The Loudwater BESS, boasting a 39 MW/55 MWh capacity, sits on 0.6 acres of agricultural property near the town of High Wycombe. Statkraft Energy will trade the battery system on behalf of Eku Energy.
Situated on 1.6 acres of land, the Basildon BESS has a capacity of 28 MW and 56 MWh. It will provide local assistance for the National Grid and is the first two-hour battery system installed in the UK by Eku Energy. Optimizer for battery storage Habitat Energy will oversee Eku Energy’s energy trading.
Eku Energy is jointly owned by a Macquarie Asset Management managed fund and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI). With the backing of two global financial powerhouses, we aim to turn our vision into reality in our ambition to advance the clean energy transition.
