European Energy has partnered with Twig as balance responsible party (BRP) for the hybrid renewable energy park at Stouby in Randers Municipality. The agreement covers the balancing of both the solar generation and the battery energy storage system that will be integrated into the existing solar plant.

European Energy recently received a building permit to upgrade the existing Stouby solar park with a battery energy storage system. The battery installation will have a power capacity of 28 MW and a storage capacity of 112 MWh. The upgrade will convert the site into a hybrid renewable energy park combining solar power generation with large-scale energy storage.

The Stouby solar park has an installed capacity of 88 MW. With the addition of battery storage, the facility will be able to store electricity generated during periods of high solar production and release it when needed. This integration enables more flexible asset operation and contributes to the efficient use of renewable electricity within the power system.

Twig will be responsible for managing the balance responsibility of the hybrid park, ensuring that electricity production and storage operations meet grid requirements. As balance responsible party, Twig will handle the forecasting and market-related balancing obligations associated with the facility’s electricity generation and storage activities.

“As hybrid renewable energy parks become more prevalent, it is increasingly important to use flexibility to deliver power when it is needed most. This agreement with Twig helps optimise the Stouby facility so electricity can be shifted to peak demand hours, supporting the power system and helping to reduce prices for customers when consumption is highest,” says Jens Peter Zink, Deputy CEO in European Energy.

“Adding battery storage to the Stouby solar park increases both the optimization complexity and financial opportunities from the asset. We look forward to balancing and co-optimizing the PV and BESS plants across energy and ancillary markets in close collaboration with European Energy,” says Jonas Stampe, Head of Business Development at Twig.

Hybrid renewable energy parks that combine generation and storage are becoming an increasingly common part of the energy system. By integrating battery storage with solar power, operators can improve the utilisation of renewable energy production and support the stability of the electricity grid.

The Stouby hybrid park by European Energy and Twig will be located in Randers Municipality, where the existing solar installation is already in operation.
