As electricity demand across India continues to rise, ensuring the reliability and resilience of critical power infrastructure has become increasingly important. With ageing grid assets requiring modernisation to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving economy, the need for advanced technologies that support efficient and uninterrupted power transmission has become more critical than ever.
Addressing this need, GE Vernova, a global energy technology company focused on electrification, decarbonisation and energy transition solutions, and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), India’s largest electric power transmission utility, have officially commenced site works for the Chandrapur Refurbishment High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Services project.
The project involves upgrading the existing 2×500 MW back-to-back HVDC link by integrating GE Vernova’s latest advanced HVDC control systems and valve technology. The modernisation aims to future-proof this critical transmission asset, enhancing grid performance, improving operational reliability, and ensuring efficient power connectivity to meet the region’s growing electricity needs.
More than a routine infrastructure upgrade, the Chandrapur Refurbishment HVDC Services project represents a strategic investment in strengthening India’s energy security. Through their collaboration, GE Vernova and Power Grid Corporation of India aim to ensure that the Chandrapur HVDC link continues to serve as a resilient, efficient, and reliable component of the national power transmission network. The refurbishment will enhance grid stability, improve long-term operational performance, and support a more secure and dependable energy future for the region.
