The Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd (KREDL) has announced a tender for the development of a 250 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) project integrated with a 250 MW/1,100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Ryapte, Karnataka.
The project will be executed on a build-own-operate (BOO) model, aiming to enhance peak power supply and improve grid utilization at the Pavagada Solar Park. Karnataka’s electricity supply companies (ESCOMs) will sign a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the successful bidder, while KREDL will serve as the nodal agency overseeing the solar-plus-storage procurement on behalf of the ESCOMs.
To facilitate the project, KREDL will lease land in the Tirumani gram panchayat near Pavagada, located in the Tumkur district, to the selected renewable energy developer.
The integration of BESS is expected to enhance the reliability and resilience of the solar project by storing excess energy generated during the day and supplying it during peak demand hours or grid outages. This move marks a significant step in Karnataka’s efforts to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure and promote grid stability.
As per the tender guidelines, “BESS will mandatorily constitute part of the solar power project. BESS charged using a source other than solar power would not qualify as RE power. BESS may be owned by the renewable power developer or tied up separately with a third party by the developer. The BESS technology can be changed by the developer at any time during the term of the PPA.”
The initiative reflects Karnataka’s continued commitment to adopting advanced energy storage technologies and fostering sustainable, future-ready energy solutions.
