NHPC Limited Appoints Bhupender Gupta as Chairman and Managing Director

Bhupender Gupta has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a Schedule A CPSE, which is a Navratna. After an endorsement by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), he took charge on September 4, 2025, at the Corporate Office in Faridabad.

Before this appointment, Gupta was the Director (Technical), THDC India Limited, but carries the extra responsibility of CMD, SJVN Limited. He was selected following the recommendation of his name by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) in June 2025.

Gupta is an Electrical Engineer possessing an MBA in Operations Management and has over 34 years of professional experience (31 of which have been in power CPSUs). He joined SJVN in 1995 to work on the commissioning of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydropower Project and on Bhutan’s 1020 MW Tala Project.

He served on key projects over the years in REC Ltd., the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (Bhutan) and THDCIL where he led the commissioning of several large-scale hydro and thermal projects, including Tehri PSP and Khurja STPP.

As a veteran of the hydro and thermal industry, and more recently the renewable, transmission and distribution industry, Gupta will likely strengthen NHPC in the Indian power industry and support its renewable energy expansion.
