NTPC Limited and Africa50 have signed a Cooperation Agreement to identify, assess and develop power-generation projects and cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa. The partnership aims to combine NTPC’s engineering and operational expertise with Africa50’s project development and financing capabilities to expand reliable electricity supply and attract investment across the continent.
As stated in a press release, the partnership will draw on NTPC’s engineering and operational capabilities and Africa50’s project development and financing expertise to advance commercially viable power projects, attract investment, and expand reliable electricity supply for households and businesses.
NTPC will contribute its technical, engineering, project development, construction management, and operational expertise to assess project feasibility, develop viable solutions, and support the progression of identified opportunities towards implementation.
Africa50 will complement these capabilities by leveraging its proprietary continental-scale project pipeline and access to governments and regulators through its 34 African country shareholders. It will identify priority power projects, structure them for investment, and support their progress throughout the project life cycle.
Leaders from both organisations underscored the significance of the Cooperation Agreement in developing commercially viable power projects across Africa.
Commenting on the announcement, Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited, said, “We look forward to working with Africa50 to develop commercially viable power projects in mutually agreed countries in Africa. Combining NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent creates a strong foundation for supporting reliable power supply and regional electricity trade.”
Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, said, “Reliable and competitively priced power is central to Africa’s industrial and economic transformation. This partnership combines Africa50’s ability to develop, de-risk and deliver investable projects with NTPC’s proven technical expertise to translate public ambition into private investment in power generation. Together, we aim to strengthen regional power systems that support industrial growth, expand trade and create jobs.”
