NTPC Green Energy, VOCPA Partner to Launch Green Hydrogen Mobility at VOC Port

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to encourage green energy technologies, and in particular, green hydrogen mobility at VOC Port. Kishore Kumar Hota, CGM, NTPC, and A Ganesan, CME, VOCPA, exchanged the MoU in the presence of Union Ministers of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal and Tamil Nadu Ministers of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Geeta Jeevan and Nainar Nagendran; Secretary (MoPSW) T.K. Ramachandran; VOCPA Chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit; and senior government officials of the Government of Tamil Nadu, NTPC, and VOCPA

In the cooperation, NGEL will establish a green hydrogen fuelling station at VOC Port and hydrogen-powered trucks with internal combustion engines to operate in the port. It is projected that this initiative will slowly supplant the fossil fuel trucks with clean ones, which will enhance decarbonization initiatives and energy security.

NTPC already has several green hydrogen projects, such as the blending project in Surat, Gujarat, which has been operational for more than two years, and mobility pilots in Leh (Ladakh), Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Bhubaneshwar (Odisha), and Kandla Port (Gujarat). NGEL is also establishing a green hydrogen hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and has established a target of 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032 with built-in energy storage solutions.

    NTPC Green Energy Limited

It is a fully owned company of NTPC Limited, which is the largest integrated power utility in India. NGEL was formed as the leader of the clean energy efforts of the company and is concerned with the development and operation of renewable energy projects such as solar, wind, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen and battery storage. Its mandate is to assist in the goals of India to pursue sustainable development through hastening the transition to green power, less reliance on fossil fuels, and environmental stewardship by creating and implementing high-capacity clean energy solutions.
