NTPC to Submit First Nuclear Project Feasibility Report and Targets 2 GW by 2032

State-run NTPC Ltd is getting ready to submit its first feasibility report for a proposed nuclear power project to the Department of Atomic Energy and will soon seek formal clearance to go ahead. If approved, this would be NTPC’s first standalone nuclear project in India. The company is aiming to build at least 2 GW of nuclear capacity by 2032 as part of its push into non-fossil energy.

NTPC is already doing feasibility studies in several states. It recently got the Bihar government’s nod to explore a site in the Banka district.

“The company will very soon submit the completed feasibility study for the nuclear project in the state.”

Under the approval process, proposals first go to the DAE’s Standing Site Selection Committee. If they clear that stage as technically viable, they move to the Atomic Energy Commission for further review.

Another source said feasibility work in two more states is close to completion, and exploratory work is ongoing in others.

A typical feasibility study looks at upfront investment, land, water availability and other infrastructure needs.

“On average, NTPC is looking to set up at least two units of 700 MW each in the states being explored.”

Industry estimates peg the cost of 1 GW of nuclear capacity at around Rs 15,000–20,000 crore, with a minimum three-year timeline from planning to commissioning. Water is critical – about 5 litres per unit of power generated – and projects need a defined exclusion zone of roughly 1 sq km.

As part of its long-term nuclear plan, NTPC is evaluating sites in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

NTPC started in 1975 as a thermal power company and has since expanded into hydro, solar, gas and other segments. Its group installed capacity now stands at 89,805.30 MW.

In nuclear, NTPC is already working with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd on a project in Rajasthan with an estimated investment of Rs 42,000 crore. NTPC holds 51% in the JV. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for the 4×700 MW Mahi Banswara Rajasthan Atomic Power Project in September last year.
