NTPC Unveils 244 GW Expansion Plan, Invests ₹7 Lakh Cror

NTPC has outlined a long-term expansion roadmap to significantly scale up its generation capacity, aiming for a total installed capacity of 244 gigawatts (GW) by 2037, which the company said will require a capital expenditure of ₹7 lakh crore.

Operating under the Ministry of Power, NTPC currently meets nearly one-fourth of India’s electricity demand through a mix of thermal, hydro, and renewable energy sources. At the group level, the company’s operational capacity has crossed 85 GW, including the recent addition of 359 MW from solar projects developed by subsidiaries in Gujarat and Rajasthan, highlighting the growing role of renewable energy in NTPC’s portfolio.

The company has 32 GW of capacity under various stages of construction. Building on this pipeline, NTPC has set an ambitious target to achieve 149 GW by 2032, as a key milestone toward the larger 244 GW goal by 2037.

Commenting on the roadmap during a meeting with lenders, CMD Gurdeep Singh said, “The expansion roadmap envisages a capital expenditure of approximately Rs 7 lakh crore, with expansion plans across energy storage systems, pumped storage projects, nuclear power, green hydrogen, and chemicals.”

The roadmap highlights NTPC’s focus on future-ready energy solutions. Along with adding new generation capacity, the company plans to invest in energy storage systems to support grid stability and the integration of renewable power. Pumped storage projects are expected to play an important role in balancing supply and demand, especially as the share of solar and wind energy increases.

NTPC is also exploring nuclear power, green hydrogen, and energy-related chemicals as part of its strategy to decarbonize the power sector and support India’s long-term climate commitments. By diversifying into these emerging clean energy technologies, NTPC aims to remain a central player in the country’s evolving energy landscape.

Overall, NTPC’s expansion plan signals a strong push toward capacity growth, technological diversification, and sustainable power generation, aligning with national goals of increasing clean energy capacity while ensuring reliable and affordable electricity for India’s growing economy.
