Origis Energy, a leading clean energy platform in the United States, has announced the successful closure of $118 million in tax equity financing from RBC Community Investments (RBC) for the Chalan Solar + Storage project located in Kern County, California. The financing marks a key milestone in advancing the development of the hybrid renewable energy project.
Project Overview and Capacity
The Chalan project combines solar generation with battery energy storage, reflecting the growing trend toward hybrid renewable energy systems.
- Solar capacity: 65 MWac
- Battery storage: 25 MW / 100 MWh
- Location: Kern County, California
- Expected commissioning: Q4 2026
Origis Energy will build, own, and run the facility. Adding battery storage will let the project store extra solar energy and use it during times of high demand. This will make the grid more reliable and efficient.
Long-Term Power Supply Agreement
The electricity generated from the project will be supplied under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Pioneer Community Energy, a not-for-profit community choice electricity provider based in Rocklin, California.
The deal guarantees that the project will make money in the long term while also providing customers in Placer and El Dorado counties with clean, cheap electricity.
Strategic Financing and Partnership
The investment from RBC Community Investments highlights continued investor confidence in renewable energy infrastructure and tax equity financing structures.
Alice Heathcote, Chief Financial Officer of Origis Energy, said, “We are delighted to partner with RBC to bring another high-quality solar and storage project to the grid and deliver reliable, cost-effective clean energy to Pioneer’s customers and communities.”
She added that the transaction reflects the company’s strong capabilities across development and financing, as well as its ability to attract leading capital partners.
Jonathan Cheng, Managing Director and Head of Renewable Energy Tax Equity Investments at RBC, stated, “RBC’s investment in the Chalan solar and storage project demonstrates our longstanding and continued commitment to the clean energy transition.”
He further noted that the partnership with Origis Energy is expected to extend to future projects.
The Chalan Solar + Storage project by Origis Energy is a big step toward building more hybrid renewable energy infrastructure in the United States. The project is in a good position to help keep the grid stable and speed up the switch to clean energy by combining solar generation with battery storage and getting long-term financing and offtake agreements.
