RIR Power Electronics Limited has announced the successful development of a high-voltage 25 kilovolt (kV), 120 kiloampere (kA) capacitor discharge semiconductor switch, marking a significant advancement in India’s power electronics manufacturing capabilities. The thyristor-based innovation represents a major milestone in indigenous high-voltage technology and aligns with the country’s broader push for self-reliance and reduced dependence on imports.
The new system was made entirely in India and supports programs like Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat. It improves India’s position in the global high-power electronics market while also improving the country’s ability to make things at home.
Advanced Technology and Design
The switch has a 125 mm silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) at its core. This is the first time this type of SCR has been made in the country and can handle blocking voltages up to 8 kV. To get the high-voltage capacity needed, several SCR units are connected in a row. This design allows for precise and stable control of very high current pulses, which makes it efficient and reliable for tough jobs.
The product has undergone extensive validation and qualification at RIR Power’s high-voltage testing facility in Halol, Gujarat. Testing under rigorous operating conditions confirmed its robust performance and suitability for critical high-energy pulse applications.
Wide-Ranging Strategic Applications
The capacitor discharge switch is designed for deployment in sectors where controlled high-current pulses are essential. These include defence systems, advanced medical technologies, and specialised applications such as directed energy systems and precision energy-based solutions.
Strengthening Domestic Capabilities
With this development, RIR Power Electronics expands its portfolio of advanced semiconductor solutions while contributing to the growth of a self-sufficient and globally competitive electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India.
Dr. Harshad Mehta, Non-Executive Chairman of RIR Power Electronics Limited, said: “We are proud to introduce the country’s first 25 kV switch, an achievement built on decades of expertise in high-power semiconductors and a sharp focus on technology and efficiency. This milestone underscores our commitment to ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, while enhancing the supply chain resilience and advancing India’s journey towards greater economic self-reliance.”
The company keeps putting money into research, design, and manufacturing to meet the needs of complicated industries and strategies. This supports India’s long-term goal of building technology-driven industries that can compete globally.
