World's First Silicon Anode EV Battery Offers 186 Miles in 5 Minutes

Future electric cars (EVs) will have a range of 186 miles (300 km) because of a solid-state battery design that was introduced by a ceramic battery maker. The battery can be charged from 5% to 60% capacity in just five minutes.

ProLogium executives revealed the design at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, claiming in a statement that compared to popular lithium-ion (Li-ion) or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, their silicon composite anode battery had a significantly better energy density, both by weight and volume.

TUV Rhineland in Germany has verified the capacity at 321 Watts per kilogram (Wh/kg) gravimetrically (power by weight) and 749 Watts per liter (Wh/L) volumetrically (power by volume). The new battery is significantly denser than current technologies, which provide less than 200 Wh/kg in the case of LFP or 200 to 300 Wh/kg from Li-ion.

By the end of 2024, ProLogium executives anticipate that further advancements will enable their silicon anode batteries to provide energy densities that are up to 77% greater. Additionally, they noted that the charging time of five minutes to reach 186 miles (300 km) is significantly shorter than the industry average of thirty minutes to achieve the same distance capacity.

Additionally, according to officials, the ProLogium battery’s modular design makes servicing, maintenance, and repair far simpler. Specifically, damage to a single battery cell or small cluster of cells won’t need the expensive replacement of the full battery pack.
