ABB has shipped its first wind power converter manufactured in India, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion after its December 2025 acquisition of Gamesa Electric’s power electronics business. The unit was produced and dispatched from ABB’s advanced Nelamangala facility in Bengaluru to a wind turbine original equipment manufacturer (OEM), reinforcing the company’s expanded focus on wind power both domestically and globally.
Boosting Local Manufacturing and Renewable Integration
The delivery represents a meaningful step in integrating Gamesa Electric’s proven wind energy conversion technologies into ABB’s broader portfolio. This development aligns with India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives, strengthening ABB’s renewable energy manufacturing footprint in the country while supporting India’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing hub for advanced renewable technologies.
ABB’s enhanced renewable offerings now include locally produced wind converters, utility-scale solar inverters, and power conversion systems for battery energy storage systems (BESS). These products are engineered for smooth integration with power grids and are expected to play a significant role in scaling renewable energy deployment across India and beyond.
Statement from ABB Leadership
“Wind energy plays a critical role in the energy transition. By delivering advanced power conversion technologies that are locally manufactured in India and engineered for effective grid integration, we are strengthening the integration of wind power into the grid and supporting the scale-up of renewable energy worldwide,” said Anoop Anand, President – Motion High Power Division, ABB India Ltd. “This milestone also reinforces India’s position as a global hub for renewable energy manufacturing and deployment.”
India’s Growing Role in Wind Energy
India is currently the world’s third-largest wind manufacturing base, projected to meet approximately 10 percent of global wind demand and scale its installed wind capacity to 107 GW by 2030. The delivery of the locally made converter underlines the country’s expanding role in the global clean energy ecosystem and supports its renewable energy ambitions.
ABB’s Renewable Energy Legacy
ABB has been advancing renewable energy technologies around the world for over 15 years, having delivered more than 60,000 wind converters and generators globally. The inclusion of Gamesa Electric’s technologies through the acquisition enhances ABB’s renewable power conversion capabilities, expanding its serviceable installed base by roughly 46 GW, which is equivalent to nearly one-fifth of India’s current installed renewable capacity.
With its focus on local manufacturing and grid-centric solutions, ABB is well positioned to support India’s next phase of renewable energy growth, contributing to the national renewable energy target of 500 GW by 2030.
