Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has claimed the top position in the Energy Intelligence Top 100 Green Utilities ranking, overtaking major international utilities including China’s National Nuclear Corp., Spain’s Acciona and Iberdrola, and Italy’s Enel. Published by UK-based Energy Intelligence, the rankings evaluate 100 leading power generators that together represent over 35% of global electricity generation capacity, based on both their renewable energy portfolios and greenhouse gas emissions intensity. This dual focus highlights the growing expectation that true climate leadership is reflected in both capacity and carbon performance.
AGEL currently operates 16.7 GW of renewable energy capacity and is on track to reach its target of 50 GW by fiscal 2030, which would contribute more than 10% of India’s national 500 GW renewable energy goal.
Commenting on this achievement, Adani Group CFO Jugeshinder (‘Robbie’) Singh said, “We have now the policy architecture and economics that work, so consequently the whole energy transition is now an economic push.”
He further added that AGEL remains committed to exceeding its FY30 renewable target.
The Energy Intelligence ranking also reflects a regional shift towards Asia, with Asian companies accounting for half of the top five, while European firms continue to dominate the remainder of the top ten. AGEL is the only Indian company among the top five, underscoring India’s emergence as a global leader in renewable energy deployment. Over the past two years, AGEL has consistently featured among the top three, previously ranking third in 2024.
In addition to renewable capacity, Energy Intelligence noted that carbon dioxide emissions from the companies included in the ranking declined by 6% last year, following a 9% decline in 2023. Although slightly slower than the previous year, this reduction remains well above the average annual emission reductions observed over the past decade, highlighting ongoing efforts to decarbonize the power sector.
The rankings emphasize that modern energy leadership requires a combination of low carbon intensity and substantial renewable capacity, both of which AGEL demonstrates. By achieving the top position, the company reinforces its role as a global benchmark for sustainable energy development, contributing significantly to India’s renewable energy goals while exemplifying responsible and climate-conscious growth.
AGEL’s recognition signals a broader trend where Asian utilities are emerging as leaders in the global energy transition, reflecting the continent’s increasing focus on renewable energy expansion and low-carbon operations. This achievement further strengthens India’s position in the global renewable energy landscape and demonstrates the growing economic and environmental viability of large-scale green power deployment.
