Assam has emerged as the leading state in the Northeast in terms of electric vehicle (EV) sales supported under the FAME-II scheme, with 10,990 EVs sold during 2022-23 and 2023-24, according to data shared by the Government of India.
The figures were provided in response to a Lok Sabha question regarding EV penetration in the Northeast. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) scheme was implemented across India from April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2024, to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility and support the development of EV charging infrastructure.
According to the data, Assam recorded 2,108 EV sales in 2022-23, which increased sharply to 8,882 units in 2023-24, taking the two-year total to 10,990 units.
Tripura ranked second among the Northeastern states, with 6,767 EVs sold during the period, followed by Meghalaya with 502 units. Manipur recorded 368 EV sales, while Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Nagaland recorded 328, 16, 9 and 6 units, respectively.
Combined EV sales across the eight Northeastern states stood at 18,986 units during 2022-23 and 2023-24. The data indicates a significant year-on-year increase in EV adoption, with sales across the region rising from 4,326 units in 2022-23 to 14,660 units in 2023-24.
Assam is also witnessing expansion in EV charging infrastructure. Under the FAME-II scheme, a total of 117 EV public charging stations (EVPCS) have been sanctioned in the state, of which 88 were operational as of July 1, 2026.
In addition, 198 EV chargers have been sanctioned across the Northeast and are being installed through Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). Assam accounts for the largest share with 117 chargers, followed by Meghalaya with 29, Nagaland with 23, Manipur with 14, Mizoram with 7, Tripura with 5 and Arunachal Pradesh with 3 chargers.
The government clarified that FAME-II was implemented on a pan-India basis and that no state-wise allocation was made under the scheme.
Across the Northeast, a total of 20,855 EVs received incentives under FAME-II, with ₹134.13 crore disbursed to EV buyers. Assam accounted for the largest share, with 11,776 incentivised EVs and ₹71.23 crore in incentives.
Tripura followed with 7,765 incentivised EVs and ₹55.67 crore disbursed. The remaining states collectively accounted for a smaller share of the incentives.
The Northeast’s overall share stood at 1.29% of the 16,21,197 EVs incentivised nationwide, while the region accounted for 2.04% of the total ₹6,575.29 crore disbursed under the FAME-II scheme.
The expansion of charging infrastructure and increasing EV sales indicate growing momentum for electric mobility in the Northeast. However, the region’s relatively low share of national EV adoption highlights the need for continued investment in charging networks and supportive policies to accelerate the transition to cleaner transportation.
Meanwhile, the government has clarified that, according to information received from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, there is currently no specific framework under the recently launched Modified UDAN Scheme related to the matter raised in the Lok Sabha question.
