Scania Industrial Batteries and MacLean Engineering have entered into a strategic battery partnership to accelerate the electrification of underground mining vehicles, combining Scania’s battery technology with MacLean’s expertise in mobile equipment for the mining industry.

The collaboration is aimed at supporting mining companies as they transition from diesel-powered fleets to battery-electric equipment to reduce emissions, lower operating costs and improve working conditions in underground mines.

Under the agreement, Scania will supply its Core 800 battery packs for MacLean’s battery-electric vehicle platform. The partnership will support both current and future deployments of battery-electric mining vehicles, with the two companies working together to deliver reliable, safe and scalable electrification solutions for demanding underground applications.

Scania said its battery systems are designed for electric rigs, loaders and other heavy-duty mining vehicles. More than 2,000 Scania battery systems are currently operating in underground mines globally. The systems support powertrains ranging from 400 to 800 volts, with scalable energy capacities from 21 kWh to 768 kWh.

The partnership comes as mining companies increasingly assess battery-electric equipment as a potential alternative to conventional diesel-powered vehicles. Electrification can help reduce tailpipe emissions in underground environments while also supporting lower operating costs and improved air quality for workers.

“Electrification in demanding off-road applications places exceptionally high requirements on safety, reliability and system integration,” said Elin Åkerström, Managing Director at Scania Industrial Batteries. “We are applying our deep expertise in electrified power solutions to support customers like MacLean as they transition to zero-emission operations in some of the world’s most challenging environments.”

Scania was selected as MacLean Engineering’s preferred battery partner following a global evaluation process that included technical assessments, compliance reviews, safety evaluations and considerations around long-term customer support.

Battery performance, operational reliability, regulatory compliance and technician safety were among the key factors considered during the selection process. The companies also focused on battery system design and safety features intended to reduce arc-flash incident energy and support safer maintenance operations in underground mining environments.

“Scania demonstrated exceptional technical capabilities, transparency and a collaborative approach throughout the evaluation process. We are excited to move forward together and continue supporting our customers as they advance their electrification strategies and provide solutions to combat the rising fuel costs we will continue to see,” said Kevin MacLean, CEO of MacLean Engineering.

The Scania Core 800 battery pack, which will be supplied under the agreement, is the company’s flagship industrial battery solution. It features 97 kWh of installed energy and a nominal voltage of 691 V, along with advanced thermal management and a proprietary battery management system.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen the deployment of battery-electric mining vehicles by combining advanced battery technology with specialised underground equipment. Scania and MacLean will continue working closely to support the growing electrification needs of the mining sector, with a focus on safety, reliability, serviceability and sustainability.

Scania Industrial Batteries is accelerating the transition to a more sustainable future by developing high-performance battery systems designed for the world’s most demanding off-road applications. Its solutions support industries such as mining, construction, agriculture, and mobile energy to improve efficiency and performance.

MacLean Engineering is a leading manufacturer of mobile equipment solutions for underground mining operations worldwide. Through innovation, safety-focused design and a commitment to sustainable mining practices, MacLean delivers technologies that improve productivity while supporting the industry’s transition toward a lower-carbon future.
