Sungrow has completed grid connection and commissioning of the 350 MW/1,243 MWh Hams Hall Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the West Midlands, UK, in partnership with energy storage owner-operator BW ESS. The project progressed from grid connection to commercial operation in just 20 days and is expected to become Europe’s largest operational battery energy storage project by capacity.
Located adjacent to National Grid’s Hams Hall substation, the project is designed to support electricity supply and demand balancing, improve grid resilience and facilitate the integration of renewable energy into the UK’s electricity system. The installation uses Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage technology, incorporating grid-forming capabilities, enhanced safety features and cost-efficient system design.
Engineering Support Enables Rapid Commissioning
The commissioning process was supported by close coordination between Sungrow and BW ESS, including the deployment of dedicated battery engineering teams directly to the project site.
During warm commissioning, teams focused on identifying faults and verifying chiller operation before proceeding to hot commissioning. Operational technology engineers remained on site during hot commissioning to support system integration and resolve operational issues.
Frequent customer engagement and established communication channels with Sungrow’s headquarters also helped accelerate technical decisions and address outstanding issues during commissioning.
Sungrow’s Vice President for Europe, James Li, said the project’s rapid delivery reflected engineering expertise, preparation and collaboration between both companies. BW ESS Chief Technology Officer Nan Jia described the commissioning milestone as a shared engineering achievement, building on the companies’ earlier collaboration at the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire.
Hams Hall BESS to Expand to 1,424 MWh
The Hams Hall project is expected to expand during its second phase, increasing its total capacity to 400 MW/1,424 MWh. BW ESS estimates that the fully expanded installation could support the electricity needs of approximately 1.3 million homes for up to 3.5 hours.
The project adds significant battery storage capacity to the UK’s electricity infrastructure as renewable energy generation continues to expand. Utility-scale BESS installations are increasingly important for managing fluctuations in renewable electricity generation and demand while supporting grid stability and energy security.
Sungrow and BW ESS Expand UK Storage Collaboration
Hams Hall builds on the companies’ existing partnership, which includes the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire. The collaboration combines Sungrow’s PowerTitan energy storage technology with engineering expertise and on-site technical support to accelerate the deployment of large-scale battery storage infrastructure.
Sungrow said its global installations of power electronic converters exceeded 1,100 GW as of June 2026. The company continues to develop renewable energy and energy storage technologies for utility-scale applications worldwide.
