Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has secured a ₹21,000 crore Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from NTPC Limited for the development of the 3×800 MW Meja Super Thermal Power Project. The order is among BHEL’s largest domestic power sector contracts and is expected to significantly strengthen the company’s order book and long-term project pipeline.
Under the contract, BHEL will be responsible for the complete execution of the project, covering design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of three 800 MW supercritical thermal power generating units. The scope also includes associated civil works and balance-of-plant facilities required for the development and operation of the project.
With a total planned capacity of 2,400 MW, the project is expected to contribute to India’s expanding electricity generation infrastructure and help meet the country’s growing power demand. The use of supercritical technology is expected to enable higher operating efficiency compared with conventional subcritical thermal power plants, supporting improved fuel utilisation and lower emissions intensity.
The contract reinforces BHEL’s position as one of India’s key power equipment manufacturers and EPC providers. The company has extensive experience in executing large-scale power projects and provides integrated engineering and manufacturing solutions across thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable energy, as well as transmission, defence, transportation and industrial sectors.
The latest order comes at a time when India’s electricity demand continues to rise, driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, infrastructure development and increasing consumption from commercial and residential users. While renewable energy capacity is expanding rapidly, thermal power continues to play a significant role in ensuring reliable and round-the-clock electricity supply, particularly as the power system integrates larger volumes of variable renewable generation.
Large-scale thermal projects equipped with supercritical technology remain an important component of India’s energy mix. These projects are designed to operate at higher temperatures and pressures than conventional thermal plants, enabling improved efficiency and reduced coal consumption per unit of electricity generated.
For BHEL, the ₹21,000 crore order is expected to provide greater visibility for its domestic power business and strengthen its execution pipeline. The project also highlights the continued demand for large-scale power generation infrastructure as India works to balance rising electricity consumption with the need for grid reliability.
The growing integration of renewable energy and energy storage technologies is also reshaping India’s power sector. However, the expansion of solar and wind capacity requires complementary sources of firm power and flexible grid infrastructure to maintain system stability. In this context, thermal generation continues to serve as a major source of dependable electricity, while battery energy storage systems (BESS) are increasingly being deployed to provide flexibility, balancing and ancillary grid services.
The Meja project is therefore expected to contribute to India’s broader power infrastructure development while strengthening BHEL’s role in the country’s evolving electricity ecosystem.
The landmark contract further demonstrates BHEL’s capability to undertake complex, large-scale power projects and reinforces its position in India’s engineering, procurement and construction landscape. With the company continuing to secure major orders across the power sector, the project is expected to support its growth while contributing to the country’s efforts to expand and modernise its electricity generation capacity.
