Public sector engineering company Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won a major contract worth ₹1,500 crore from Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) to build a captive power plant at SAIL’s integrated steel plant in Bokaro, Jharkhand. This award marks another significant project in BHEL’s power sector portfolio.
Contract and Project Scope
SAIL has given BHEL the Letter of Award (LoA) for the construction of a captive power plant (CPP) package worth between ₹1,200 crore and ₹1,500 crore. The order includes the supply, erection, and commissioning of equipment needed to generate power for SAIL’s steel operations.
The captive plant will be very important for making the steel plant’s energy supply more stable by giving it reliable and constant electricity for its production processes. It helps SAIL cut down on its reliance on outside power sources and better manage its costs.
Project Timeline and Execution
As per the agreement, BHEL will begin work immediately after finalising all required approvals and site preparations. The company aims to complete the project within the agreed time frame so that the captive plant can begin operations on schedule.
The project includes major power generation equipment, balance of plant systems, and other civil works that go along with them. BHEL will be in charge of the whole project and make sure that it meets all technical, safety, and environmental standards.
BHEL’s Performance and Growth
Captive power plant contracts are important for BHEL as they help diversify the company’s order book beyond conventional utility power projects. BHEL has been securing several orders across thermal power, renewables, and industrial captive power sectors, helping maintain its business momentum.
Industry analysts say that these contract wins will support BHEL’s financial performance and strengthen its presence in energy infrastructure development.
Statements from Leadership
A BHEL spokesperson said, “We are pleased to win this captive power plant contract from SAIL. The project reflects our strong engineering capability and commitment to supporting India’s energy and industrial needs.”
The spokesperson added that BHEL will work closely with SAIL to deliver on project requirements on time and with high quality.
The Bokaro CPP project adds to BHEL’s growing list of energy sector achievements. BHEL is still helping with important infrastructure development in India by working on a lot of projects and getting a lot of orders. This helps both the public sector and the country’s energy goals.
