BSPGCL Awards 125 MW/500 MWh BESS Projects to Boost Bihar’s Energy Storage Capacity

Aura Power has sold its 50 MW Kaišiadorys battery storage project in Lithuania to UAB Karjerų linija, marking its first BESS transaction.

Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) has finalized the bid in its standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) scheme of 125 MW / 500 MWh. The auction was administered in a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) process, which would boost the growth of energy storage infrastructure in the state. This tender was floated way back in March 2025 with an invitation to bid for the development of a 500 MWh standalone BESS. Participants had to have at least 20 MWh of project size to participate.

Six companies came out as auction winners. Barbrik Projects has been awarded the biggest bulk, 37.5 MW / 150 MWh. Prostarm Info Systems had been given 30 MW / 120 MWh, and also the Hindustan Thermal Project (Hindustan Power) had also received the same quantity of 30 MW / 120 MWh. Suryam International and Kundan Green Energy were awarded capacities of 10 MW and 40 MWh, respectively. The 7.5 MW / 30 MWh went to Saatvik Green Energy. In total, such projects will add up to the cumulative planned capacity of 125 MW / 500 MWh.

The projects were allocated at a fixed tariff of 4.44 lakh/MW/month, which is applicable to all the winning developers. This uniform tariff means that there was a competitive bidding outcome, and not only is the confidence of the BESS sector growing, but also the confidence of the BESS sector is growing. The given companies will be awarded, and they are supposed to provide their storage capacities within the terms and conditions of the tender.

The given BESS project is an important step towards the reinforcement of the energy infrastructure of Bihar. The state wants to increase grid stability, enhance power quality, and integrate renewable energy with battery storage capacity, which makes management more effective. The 500 MWh of energy storage will facilitate the improved creation of the load and the minimization of dependence on the conventional energy supply during periods of peak demand.

The auction completion is considered to be a good sign to the power sector of the region, as more investments in the power business would come out in future power battery storage. As more emphasis is given to renewable energy and energy storage, these initiatives are important in ensuring energy reliability and sustainability. Another lesson that can be learned is represented by the successful auction process of BSPGCL that demonstrates the increasing role of state utilities in the process of implementing advanced energy technologies.
