CATL Wins 2026 Volkswagen Group Award, Expands Strategic Partnership with Volkswagen

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) has been honoured with the 2026 Volkswagen Group Award, becoming the only power battery manufacturer and the only Mainland China-based enterprise to receive the recognition this year. The award highlights CATL’s contributions to innovation, supply chain excellence, and its role in supporting Volkswagen Group’s global electrification strategy.

The Volkswagen Group Award is presented to suppliers that demonstrate outstanding performance across key areas, including technological innovation, product quality, operational excellence, and long-term strategic collaboration.

CATL said the recognition reflects its continued efforts in research and development (R&D), maintaining a stable global supply chain, and ensuring efficient execution across international markets.

CATL has been a key battery supplier to Volkswagen since 2018, when it began providing nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery cells for the automaker’s Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform. The MEB platform serves as the foundation for several of Volkswagen Group’s battery-electric vehicles across multiple brands and has played a central role in the company’s transition toward electric mobility.

Building on this long-standing relationship, the two companies have now expanded their collaboration to include the mass production of Volkswagen’s Unified Cell. The Unified Cell is a standardized battery cell concept developed by Volkswagen to simplify battery production, improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs, and support a wide range of electric vehicle models across the group’s portfolio.

According to CATL, the company has supplied more than 200 GWh of battery capacity to Volkswagen Group to date. Its battery technology currently powers 45 electric vehicle models spanning eight Volkswagen Group brands, underlining the scale and depth of the partnership. The battery manufacturer said its products continue to support the production of a growing number of electric vehicles aimed at accelerating the global adoption of sustainable transportation.

The expanded cooperation is expected to further strengthen Volkswagen’s battery supply chain as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise. By combining CATL’s battery technology and manufacturing capabilities with Volkswagen’s large-scale vehicle production, the partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of EV manufacturing.

CATL said it remains committed to supporting Volkswagen’s electrification journey by delivering advanced battery systems backed by a resilient and efficient global supply chain. The company added that continued innovation in battery technology will remain a key focus as it works with automakers to improve vehicle performance, safety, and sustainability.

As one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers, CATL supplies lithium-ion batteries to several leading global automotive companies. The latest recognition from Volkswagen reinforces the company’s position as a strategic partner in the global electric vehicle ecosystem and highlights its growing role in enabling the transition to cleaner mobility solutions.

The award also reflects the increasing importance of strong supplier partnerships in the automotive industry’s shift toward electrification. With battery technology playing a critical role in EV performance and affordability, collaborations such as the one between CATL and Volkswagen are expected to remain central to the expansion of electric mobility worldwide.

CATL is a global leader in zero-carbon new energy technology, committed to providing first-class solutions and services for global new energy applications, building a zero-carbon energy ecosystem with a comprehensive incremental strategy, promoting energy transition and sustainable development.
