One of the dominant state-owned infrastructure companies, China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC), launched a major procurement procedure on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems amounting to 25 GWh. The tender is one of the greatest energy storage projects in China, and it will signify a turning point in the retailing of the Chinese energy storage market.
The procurement falls under the current regulatory changes, especially the document No. 136 of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) that was published in February 2025. This policy gets rid of required storage of energy that must be involved when renewable energy projects are carried out, and instead they encourage independent storage systems to be implemented by the use of their market opportunities. In such a region as Inner Mongolia, the spot power market price is currently within the CNY -0.05 to 1.5 per kWh, which promotes the arbitration opportunities of storage operators.
According to the China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA), as of 5 months of 2025, new milliseconds of energy storage were 13.3 GW and 32.1 GWh in China, up 52.5 and 41.8 percent, respectively, compared to the previous year. The increase highlights the rapidly gained importance of energy storage in backing up China’s renewable power network.
“This tender is a strategic step to advance energy storage capabilities, ensuring stability and efficiency in our renewable energy systems.”
– CEEC representative.
The 25 GWh LFP battery systems will enhance grid reliability, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources across the country.
The undertaking will catalyze investment and innovation into the energy storage market of China that offers promise to the indigenous manufacturers and service providers in the nation. Based on the market-based mechanisms, CEEC will help to achieve an optimal deployment of energy storage, benefiting economic growth and sustainable energy development.
This massive purchase demonstrates the leading position of CEEC in improving China’s clean energy target, which entrenches the determination of the country in establishing an efficient and vibrant energy storage network.
