CPS Energy has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire up to 500 megawatts (MW) of additional battery storage, reinforcing its commitment to providing affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy to the greater San Antonio area. This initiative supports the utility’s previously approved Vision 2027 Generation Plan, which aims to expand and modernize the region’s energy infrastructure while meeting the growing demand from a rapidly expanding community.
“This request to add more battery storage to our generation portfolio continues to fulfill our promise to deliver on the utility’s Vision 2027 Generation Plan,” said Rudy D. Garza, President and CEO of CPS Energy. “The RFP reinforces our team’s ongoing commitment to secure additional energy resources needed to keep pace with our community’s rapid growth.”
Upon completion of the RFP process, CPS Energy anticipates having more than 1,000 MW of operational or contracted battery storage capacity to serve its customers. As part of the Vision 2027 plan, the utility has already successfully brought 50 MW of storage capacity online. An additional 470 MW is currently under development and is expected to be operational by 2026. This continued expansion of battery storage will strengthen grid reliability, support renewable energy integration, and ensure that CPS Energy can meet the evolving energy needs of its community efficiently.
The RFP also aligns with CPS Energy’s commitment to the City of San Antonio’s Climate Action & Adaptation Plan (CAAP). This plan focuses on generation resource diversity while pursuing carbon neutrality by 2050, further supporting CPS Energy’s goal of building a sustainable energy future for the city.
“The RFP demonstrates CPS Energy’s proactive approach in investing in advanced energy technologies and solutions that support both reliability and sustainability,” said Rudy D. Garza. “Battery storage is a key component in our generation portfolio, enabling us to balance supply and demand, integrate more renewable energy, and continue delivering safe and reliable electricity to our customers.”
The deadline to submit proposals for the RFP is Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at 11:45 p.m. Central Time. CPS Energy encourages qualified vendors to participate and contribute to the utility’s vision of a modern, resilient, and sustainable energy system.
