Cygni Energy and Indus Towers have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration on energy storage solutions for India’s telecom infrastructure. The partnership will assess the development of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity of up to 1.5 GWh, as telecom operators and infrastructure providers seek more reliable and efficient energy solutions for expanding digital networks.
Under the proposed collaboration, the two companies will evaluate opportunities to establish BESS manufacturing capabilities specifically suited to the requirements of telecom infrastructure. The partnership will also examine advanced battery technologies that can improve the reliability, energy efficiency and sustainability of telecom operations.
The initiative is aimed at addressing the growing energy requirements of telecom networks, where reliable backup power is critical for maintaining uninterrupted connectivity. Battery storage can help telecom infrastructure manage power fluctuations, provide backup during grid outages and improve overall energy management at network sites.
Cygni Energy Plans to Expand Battery Manufacturing Capacity
Cygni Energy Founder and CEO Venkat Rajaraman said the initiative will focus on building manufacturing scale, strengthening technology capabilities and preparing for the evolving energy requirements of large-scale telecom infrastructure.
The company plans to develop battery manufacturing capacity of up to 2 GWh, while expanding its existing battery portfolio beyond 100Ah solutions. Cygni Energy is also working towards higher-capacity 314Ah battery systems and evaluating emerging battery technologies for future applications.
The expansion is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to supply energy storage systems for telecom and other commercial applications as demand for battery-based backup and energy management solutions increases.
Advanced Battery Technologies for Telecom Applications
The collaboration will also explore advanced battery technologies designed for telecom applications. The focus will be on improving operational reliability while reducing energy consumption and supporting more sustainable telecom infrastructure.
Telecom towers and associated network infrastructure require dependable power supplies, particularly in areas where grid availability can be inconsistent. BESS solutions can provide backup power while potentially reducing dependence on conventional backup systems and improving energy utilisation.
The proposed collaboration between Cygni Energy and Indus Towers could therefore support the development of storage solutions tailored to the operating conditions and energy requirements of telecom networks.
Industry Collaboration to Support Energy Storage Adoption
Prof. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor at IIT Madras and Chairman of ITEL Foundation, said collaboration among energy users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can help accelerate the development and adoption of energy storage technologies in India.
Such partnerships could help bridge the gap between battery technology development and large-scale commercial deployment by bringing together manufacturing capabilities, technology expertise and end-user requirements.
Telecom Sector Drives Demand for BESS
The partnership comes as India’s telecom sector continues to expand alongside growing demand for digital connectivity and data services. Telecom infrastructure providers are increasingly evaluating energy storage technologies to improve the reliability and efficiency of network operations.
For telecom applications, BESS can serve multiple functions, including backup power, load management and integration with renewable energy sources. The technology could also help infrastructure providers optimise energy consumption across distributed telecom sites.
With Cygni Energy planning to expand its manufacturing capacity and Indus Towers exploring storage solutions for telecom infrastructure, the proposed collaboration could contribute to the development of a larger domestic ecosystem for telecom-focused battery energy storage systems.
