EDF Power Solutions India has signed a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with NTPC to jointly develop, own, operate and maintain pumped storage and hydropower projects in India and neighbouring countries. The partnership was announced by EDF Power Solutions India through its official communication.
Under the agreement, the two companies will collaborate on pumped storage and hydro projects, including hydropower projects bundled with renewable energy. The partnership is aimed at supporting the development of energy infrastructure that combines hydropower capabilities with renewable energy generation.
The proposed collaboration will cover multiple stages of project development, including developing, owning, operating and maintaining the projects. The scope includes pumped storage projects as well as conventional hydro projects that can be integrated with renewable energy.
Pumped storage projects can provide energy storage capabilities by using electricity to pump water to an elevated reservoir and generating electricity when required. Such projects can support the integration of variable renewable energy sources by providing a flexible source of stored power.
The JVA extends the potential collaboration between EDF Power Solutions India and NTPC to projects in India as well as neighbouring countries. The partnership brings together EDF Power Solutions India’s renewable energy capabilities and NTPC’s presence in the power generation sector.
The agreement also covers hydro projects bundled with renewable energy, allowing the partners to explore project configurations combining hydropower with other renewable energy sources. Such projects can contribute to the development of integrated clean energy infrastructure and support the evolving requirements of the power sector.
The partnership forms part of the broader expansion of renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure in the region. Pumped storage hydropower can play a role in balancing electricity supply and demand while supporting greater integration of renewable generation into power systems.
