Enervoxa Explores Rare Earth Concentrates Plant in India

Canadian climate technology developer Enervoxa is planning discussions with Vedanta, Hindalco Industries Limited and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) to explore the establishment of a processing plant in India for extracting rare earth elements from red mud, a byproduct of aluminium production. The company is considering eastern India as a potential location and is engaging with aluminium producers and other industrial partners to evaluate commercial viability and develop an integrated end-to-end value chain. The proposed initiative aims to address both industrial waste management and the growing need for critical minerals.

A commercial-scale facility is expected to require an investment of approximately 250 million dollars to 350 million dollars and could be financed through a combination of strategic equity and project financing, the chief executive indicated to Reuters while outlining development options. Enervoxa has spent the past eight years developing its technology to recover rare earth concentrates from bauxite residue. The company is currently evaluating whether to undertake complete processing within India or produce a concentrate for downstream refining. It is also assessing different financing models and the roles of potential partners across various stages of project execution.

Interest in recovering rare earth concentrates from red mud has increased as countries seek alternatives to the highly concentrated global processing capacity. In addition to rare earth concentrates, the recovery process is expected to produce iron oxide, coagulation agents, pigments and titanium-bearing materials. These rare earth concentrates can support industries producing mobile devices, electric vehicle motors and defence systems. Industry observers believe there is significant downstream demand, provided a consistent quality of concentrate can be maintained.

Enervoxa also plans to engage engineering companies, steel manufacturers and critical minerals processing firms to develop an integrated value chain. The company intends to seek government support and collaborate with research institutions working on metal extraction and enrichment from red mud. Alongside its India plans, Enervoxa is exploring opportunities in North America and Southeast Asia while continuing commercial discussions with prospective Indian partners to advance project planning and financing. Before any firm commitments are made, stakeholders are expected to evaluate project timelines, regulatory approvals and logistical requirements.
