The Forum of Load Despatchers (FOLD), in collaboration with GRID-INDIA and the Centre for Energy Regulation, IIT Kanpur, successfully organised a three-day training programme on “Regulatory Governance Framework in the Indian Power Sector” from July 22 to 24, 2026, at the IIT Kanpur Outreach Centre in Noida. The initiative aimed to strengthen regulatory awareness, improve governance practices, and enhance operational excellence across India’s evolving power sector.

The programme brought together 35 officials from State Load Despatch Centres (SLDCs) and Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs), providing a platform for knowledge sharing on the regulatory and statutory framework governing power system operations. Participants also received insights into Grid Code compliance, electricity market reforms, and the importance of transparency, accountability, and good governance in ensuring the reliable operation of the national power system.

As India’s electricity sector undergoes rapid transformation with increasing renewable energy integration, energy storage deployment, and market-based power transactions, the role of load despatch centres has become increasingly critical. The programme focused on equipping system operators with a deeper understanding of the regulatory landscape while enhancing their ability to manage complex grid operations efficiently and in compliance with evolving regulations.

The valedictory session was attended by Samir Chandra Saxena, Chairman and Managing Director of GRID-INDIA, who highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building in strengthening regulatory compliance and maintaining secure, reliable, and efficient grid operations. He emphasised that developing skilled professionals is essential to supporting India’s growing electricity demand and facilitating the integration of renewable energy resources into the national grid.

The collaboration between FOLD, GRID-INDIA, and IIT Kanpur reflects a shared commitment to strengthening institutional capabilities within the power sector through structured training and knowledge development. Such initiatives are expected to help improve decision-making, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across regional and state-level grid management institutions.

With India accelerating its clean energy transition and expanding investments in renewable power, battery energy storage systems, and smart grid technologies, capacity-building programmes for system operators are becoming increasingly important. Strengthening regulatory governance and operational expertise will play a vital role in ensuring grid stability, supporting electricity market reforms, and enabling the reliable integration of renewable energy into the country’s power system.
