The Ministry of Power has granted approval for the export of electricity to the Nepal Electricity Authority for a period of 18 hours each day, from 13 September 2026 through 31 December 2026. The approval will enable Nepal to access additional electricity from India during this period, supporting the country’s power requirements and helping maintain a reliable electricity supply amid increased demand and disruptions to domestic generation capacity.
Under the approved arrangement, India will be able to export up to 600 MW of electricity through the Muzaffarpur–Dhalkebar 400 kV double-circuit transmission line. In addition, up to 54 MW of power will be supplied through the Tanakpur–Mahendranagar 132 kV single-circuit transmission line. The total quantum of electricity to be exported to Nepal from January 2027 onwards will be reviewed by the Ministry of Power in December 2026, taking into account Nepal’s power requirements, generation availability and prevailing conditions in the regional electricity sector.
The recent floods have caused significant damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, reducing its domestic power generation capacity and creating an additional requirement for electricity. The approval will help Nepal meet its power requirements during this difficult period and further strengthen the close and longstanding energy cooperation between India and Nepal.
India remains committed to supporting Nepal and strengthening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector.
The approved power supply is expected to provide greater stability to Nepal’s electricity system during a period of reduced domestic generation. The arrangement will also help ensure continued access to reliable electricity while restoration and rehabilitation efforts are undertaken for hydropower facilities affected by the floods.
The continued cross-border power cooperation reflects the strong energy partnership between India and Nepal. Regular electricity exchanges and coordinated transmission arrangements have played an important role in meeting seasonal power requirements and supporting the development of resilient energy systems in both countries.
