Indofast Energy Deploys 80 EV Battery Swap Stations

In a significant boost to India’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Indofast Energy—a 50:50 joint venture between Indian Oil Corporation and SUN Mobility—has successfully installed 80 EV battery swapping stations across 25 railway stations in the Hyderabad and Secunderabad divisions of South Central Railway (SCR). The company has also announced plans to set up an additional 40 battery swapping facilities in the next three months.

Of the 80 facilities currently operational, 56 are located in the Secunderabad division while the remaining 24 serve the Hyderabad division. These battery swapping stations are expected to benefit a wide range of users including ride-sharing drivers, last-mile delivery partners, and daily commuters using electric two- and three-wheelers. By offering quick and convenient battery replacements, the initiative aims to eliminate range anxiety and enhance operational productivity.

“This is a proud moment for Indofast Energy as we partner with Indian Railways on this transformative journey,” said Anant Badjatya, CEO of Indofast Energy. “We are excited to continue expanding this collaboration, which supports our mission to create a robust and accessible battery swapping ecosystem for India’s rapidly growing EV segment.”

The deployment aligns with Indian Railways’ broader clean energy and e-mobility goals. As part of this collaboration, the battery swap stations have been strategically located within railway premises to enhance last-mile connectivity and reduce congestion and emissions in surrounding station areas.

“This first-of-its-kind initiative with SCR marks a significant step towards building cleaner and more efficient transit ecosystems,” said R. Gopalakrishnan, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad. “By integrating battery swapping infrastructure within our premises, we aim to offer faster, cleaner last-mile solutions for passengers and the public.”

Indofast Energy is currently operating over 900 battery swapping stations across more than 20 cities in India, facilitating over 1.4 million battery swaps monthly. The company aims to scale up to 10,000 stations across 40+ cities within the next three years, targeting more than one million EV users through its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model.

The rollout of these stations marks a milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable urban mobility and sets a model for public-private partnerships in accelerating EV adoption nationwide.
