The International Energy Agency (IEA) has been selected to host the Mission Innovation (MI) Secretariat, a global government-led initiative focused on accelerating research, development, and demonstration of advanced energy technologies. The decision, approved by the member governments of both organizations, positions the IEA as a central hub for global collaboration on innovation in sustainable energy.
Mission Innovation: Driving Global Energy Innovation
Launched in 2015, Mission Innovation aims to make advanced energy technologies more affordable, attractive, and accessible worldwide. The initiative fosters collaboration among governments and partners, supporting innovation that strengthens energy security, reduces costs, and promotes sustainability.
The Secretariat’s relocation to the IEA headquarters in Paris enables Mission Innovation to join several other global initiatives under the IEA, leveraging the Agency’s expertise and international reach to further accelerate energy technologyenergy technology development and deployment.
Global Membership and Collaboration
Mission Innovation operates under the leadership of its 24 member governments, which include Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, the European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The initiative meets annually at the Ministerial level, providing a platform for policy coordination, knowledge sharing, and strategic partnerships among participating countries.

By hosting the Secretariat, the IEA is set to enhance global coordination on energy technology research, scale-up, and deployment. This partnership will enable governments and stakeholders to accelerate innovation, strengthen energy systems, and create a pathway toward a more secure, affordable, and sustainable global energy future.
