JT Solar Technology is proud to partner with UNSW Canberra, VOLTVAL, and other industry collaborators to pilot an AI-powered energy system designed to make rooftop solar and battery storage more accessible for strata and multi-unit residential buildings.
Together with VOLTVAL, JT Solar Technology has developed the Modular Power Portal System, also known as MPPS. This innovative platform integrates rooftop solar generation with shared battery storage, helping strata and multi-unit residential buildings better manage clean energy across multiple residents, units, and properties.
The project is supported by a $1.2 million grant from the Australian Department of Education’s Trailblazer Recycling & Clean Energy program. Through this partnership, researchers from UNSW Canberra will add an advanced artificial intelligence layer to the MPPS, helping the system forecast energy generation, predict electricity demand, and optimize energy flow in real time.
Expanding Clean Energy Access for Strata and Multi-Unit Buildings
Australia is one of the world leaders in rooftop solar adoption. However, many Australians living in strata and multi-unit buildings have not been able to enjoy the same benefits as standalone homeowners.
Strata and multi-unit buildings often involve complex ownership structures, shared roof space, multiple meters, outdated metering systems, and buildings that were not originally designed for distributed energy resources. These challenges can make it difficult to deploy rooftop solar and battery storage in a simple, fair, and cost-effective way.
The MPPS is designed to help solve these challenges by creating a smarter shared energy platform that supports clean energy use across multiple residents, units, and buildings.
Using AI to Improve Energy Flow Across Properties
The MPPS connects rooftop solar, battery storage, and energy users through a smarter shared energy system.
With UNSW Canberra’s AI-enabled optimization technology, the system will be able to:
- Forecast solar generation and electricity demand
- Coordinate shared solar and battery resources across multiple residents, units and properties
- Balance electricity flow in real time
- Improve renewable energy use across participating buildings
- Support lower operating costs for property owners, strata managers and residents
According to the UNSW research team, the technology is expected to increase renewable energy usage and may reduce operating costs for participating buildings by up to 30%.
A Real-World Pilot Across Sydney
The project will involve a multi-site pilot across residential and commercial locations in Sydney. These real-world trial sites will provide valuable performance data to validate the system and support future deployment across a broader range of building types.
The pilot will also help demonstrate how shared solar and battery systems can work in practical property environments, including strata buildings, multi-unit residential communities, and other complex urban properties.
Building a More Inclusive Clean Energy Future
JT Solar Technology Director, Mr Jason Jiangang Xiao said the partnership with UNSW Canberra is an important step in validating the MPPS and preparing the technology for wider market adoption.

This pilot has been made possible through the support of several key partners, including UNSW Canberra, VOLTVAL, Beaumont Strata Management, Ocean Building Management, Piper Alderman, SAJ Electric, Squared-X, and One Stop Warehouse.
The project is backed by the Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy Lab to Market grant, an Australian government initiative designed to support the commercialization of clean energy innovations and help bring new technologies from prototype to market.
