KYOCERA AVX, a prominent worldwide producer of cutting-edge electronic components designed to spur technological advancement and create a brighter future, has added the new 9155-900 Series 2.5mm-pitch vertical-mate battery connectors to its already impressive line of standard battery connectors.

When a module, battery pack, mating connection, or PCB is pressed vertically into place, the new 9155-900 Series 2.5mm-pitch vertical-mate battery connectors’ special contact shape deflects smoothly, allowing for full vertical engagement without running the risk of contact breakage. In order to reliably prevent contact damage that might impair connection performance and lifespan, users of traditional right-angle battery connectors must engage the contacts by entering the mating module or battery pack at an angle before rotating it into position. Not so with the 9155-900 Series. Regardless of user expertise or skill level, users may really mate these connectors from any angle without unintentionally injuring the contacts, guaranteeing high-integrity connections.

The 9155-900 Series 2.5mm-pitch vertical-mate battery connectors feature an extremely forgiving sweeping beam contact design and an anti-snag feature that reliably protects the contacts from damage during deflection, as well as when static. Additionally, the series includes gold-plated beryllium copper (BeCu) contacts that are incredibly durable and dependable, offering exceptional electrical and mechanical performance for up to 5,000 mating cycles. Additionally, solder tabs and plastic locating bosses are optional, which increase the connector’s mechanical stability in high-shock and vibration environments, such as automotive applications.

The series includes pure tin tails, flame-retardant (UL94 V-0) black, glass-filled Nylon 46 insulators, and two to six BeCu contacts with selective gold-over-nickel plating of either 0.4µm or 0.8µm (the latter is appropriate for harsh-environment applications, while the former is suitable for the majority of commercial and industrial applications). They have ratings of up to 3A, 500VACRMS or the DC equivalent, and operating temperatures between -40°C and +125°C. Additionally, they comply with REACH and RoHS regulations and are supplied in 800 pieces for automated pick and place assembly in tape and reel packaging.

In the industrial, automotive, datacom, home appliance, and consumer electronics sectors, the new 9155-900 Series 2.5mm-pitch vertical-mate battery connectors are ideal for handheld and portable devices that need to be docked or cradled, like charging stations, internet and home appliances that need battery backup, and automotive applications that need to be able to easily install and remove modules or battery packs, like headsets, gaming controllers, walkie talkies, and automotive cooling fans.

“Traditional right-angle battery connectors with exposed contacts require pluggable modules to be inserted at an angle and then gently rotated into position to prevent contact damage. And while that may seem insignificant, the extra step required to safely and successfully mate traditional battery connectors increases the potential for mismating by half,” stated Perrin Hardee, Product Marketing Manager at KYOCERA AVX. “Our new 9155-900 Series 2.5mm-pitch vertical-mate battery connectors are engineered to ensure proper mating from any angle and eliminate the possibility of inadvertently damaging the contacts during the process—regardless of user experience or skill level. They’re also compact and robust enough to withstand automotive levels of shock and vibration.”

With over 25 years of experience manufacturing battery connections, KYOCERA AVX provides the widest range of standard battery connectors on the market with its 9155 family of battery connectors. Board-to-board connections and battery pack integration are made possible by the family’s extensive range of sturdy, horizontally and vertically mated connector series. The 9155 series also includes tape and reel packaging that is compatible with automated processes and very durable and dependable gold-plated BeCu contacts that have been shown to deliver high-integrity connections in challenging conditions for up to 15,000 mating procedures. Additionally, the range may be tailored to meet the needs of certain applications.
