Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Mescom) has planned to develop 1,000 EV charging points within its jurisdiction over the next five years.

MESCOMDuring the initial phase, Mescom will collaborate with private entities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to establish 195 charging centers.

These centers will be strategically located in Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru districts, except for Udupi district, where a new tender will be issued due to a lack of response.

To optimize convenience for EV drivers, the chosen locations for the charging points have been selected to enable drivers to utilize their charging time for rest or leisure activities.

Mescom has identified 32 of its own sites and an additional 48 government-owned locations for the construction of the charging infrastructure.

Currently, there are a total of 61 EV charging stations in operation within the Mescom region.

These stations are distributed as follows: 17 charging stations are located in the DK district, which includes three stations in Mangaluru.

Additionally, there are 12 charging stations in Udupi, 17 in Shivamogga, and 12 in Chikkamagaluru.

These stations primarily offer Type-1 charging points with a capacity of 3kWh, suitable for autos and two-wheelers, providing slow charging options.

However, the upcoming charging stations will also feature high-capacity charging points suitable for cars.

H.G. Ramesh, the Managing Director (in charge) of Mescom, highlighted the company’s efforts to promote environmentally friendly vehicles by reducing the EV charging fee from Rs 5 per unit to Rs 4.50 per unit, making it more affordable for EV owners.

Ramesh further emphasized Mescom’s commitment to advancing sustainable transportation.

The goal of establishing 1,000 charging stations within the next five years will be accomplished gradually, ensuring broad accessibility for EV owners.
