MNRE appoints Mir Mohammed Ali as its Director

The Government of India has appointed Mir Mohammed Ali, a 2011-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, as Director in the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE). His tenure will extend for five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The official order instructed the Kerala state government to relieve Mr. Ali immediately so he could take up his new role in New Delhi. Prior to this appointment, he served as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), Managing Director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), and Special Secretary in the Power Department of Kerala.

Originally from Chennai, Mir Mohammed Ali holds degrees in Electronics Engineering and Political Science, and secured All India Rank 59 in the Civil Services Examination. Over the years, he has built a reputation for innovative governance and public-oriented reforms.

As District Collector of Kannur in 2016, he spearheaded the district’s transformation into India’s first plastic-disposable-free zone, introduced the VR Kannur App for real-time citizen feedback, and promoted government transparency. His initiatives earned Kannur five Kerala e-Governance Awards, including Best e-Governed District.

In his role as Director of Survey & Land Records, he launched Map My Home, a project that digitized land records using Google Maps with participation from college students. As Director of the State Suchitwa Mission, he advanced waste management reforms across Kerala. He also led the Satya J Project, an anti-fake news initiative aimed at educating students and teachers in media literacy.

    Vision for MNRE

With his proven track record in administrative efficiency, technological integration, and sustainability initiatives, Mir Mohammed Ali is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping MNRE’s policy direction and accelerating India’s renewable energy transition. His expertise aligns closely with the ministry’s mission to scale up clean energy deployment, strengthen infrastructure, and promote indigenous green technologies.

The appointment comes at a time when India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity and focusing on integrated solutions in solar, wind, energy storage, and green hydrogen. In his role as Director, Mr. Ali will support these national goals by fostering innovation, ensuring efficient project execution, and enhancing stakeholder engagement.
