The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) recently held a key meeting at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan, New Delhi, chaired by Shri Santosh Sarangi, Secretary, MNRE, in collaboration with the All India Discoms Association (AIDA). The meeting focused on addressing critical challenges in the adoption of renewable energy (RE) and the effective implementation of flagship schemes such as PM-KUSUM and PMSGY. This initiative aims to accelerate renewable energy projects across the country, supporting India’s commitment to its national clean energy transition goals.
Among the significant talks, there was road connection with the view of matching the Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets with the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) rules. The alignment is essential in improving the use of renewable energy and having adequate procedures where discoms can best operate the RCO undertakings efficiently. The appreciable unresolved issues on renewable energy procurement under discussion, such as lags on evacuation infrastructure, which are among the influential obstacles to prompt BE efforts, are also discussed.
Another reason brought to focus was cost minimization to ensure easier incorporation of renewable energy into the grid. The MNRE plans to do so by cutting the costs, thus stimulating a stronger investment and accelerating the use of green energy solutions throughout the country.
A major part of the gathering was devoted to discussing the implementation of the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) as part of the PM-KUSUM scheme, especially with reference to resolving intermittency issues arising from the supply of renewable energy. Component A of the scheme focused more on the special needs of smaller and northeastern states as well, so as to achieve balance in national development.
Also, a debate surrounded the implementation of Solar+BESS under the PMSGY programme, and rationally, efforts would be needed to tackle state-specific implementation challenges in order to maximize results.
This harmony between MNRE and AIDA portrays the dedication and desire of the involved stakeholders to overcome the obstacles and expedite the process of the transition to renewable energy in India, making it part of a sustainable and resilient energy future.
