NTPC Limited has awarded multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) EPC contracts across its thermal power plants to SolarWorld Energy Solutions, Enviro Infra Engineers, and GR Infraprojects. The projects aim to integrate grid-scale battery storage with existing thermal assets to improve power reliability, manage peak demand, and support renewable energy integration.
SolarWorld Energy Solutions
SolarWorld has effectively swept awards across three major thermal power stations and one massive solar park in Rajasthan, totaling over ₹600 crore in fresh orders in a single week.
Lot-1: 264 MWh Project at Solapur
SolarWorld secured its first major win under Lot-1 at the Solapur Super Thermal Power Station.
- Capacity: 132 MW / 264 MWh
- Project Value: ~₹314.26 crore
- Scope: EPC execution of BESS system
- Timeline: ~15 months
This project marked SolarWorld’s entry into NTPC’s large-scale thermal-integrated storage program
Lot-2: Additional 250 MWh Across Two Thermal Plants
Building on its initial win, SolarWorld further expanded its presence under Lot-2, securing two additional BESS projects:
1. Unchahar Thermal Power Station (Uttar Pradesh)
- Capacity: 50 MW / 100 MWh
- Project Value: ~₹108.22 crore
2. Solapur Thermal Power Station (Maharashtra) – Additional Package
- Capacity: 75 MW / 150 MWh
- Project Value: ~₹176.91 crore
- Combined Capacity (Lot-2): 250 MWh
- Execution Timeline: ~15 months
Solapur is now one of the largest combined thermal-plus-storage sites in India. SolarWorld will handle everything from the battery racks to the 33 kV pooling switchgears.
Enviro Infra Engineers
Enviro Infra Engineers has entered India’s grid-scale energy storage sector with two major NTPC BESS EPC contracts worth over ₹1,070 crore.
Lot-1 Win: ₹664.33 Crore EPC Package
Awarded on March 28, 2026, this package focuses on strengthening grid flexibility at key thermal power hubs in South India.

Scope:
- EPC execution including supply and services
- Long-term maintenance for the system
- Execution Timeline: ~15 months
Part of NTPC’s 2.3 GWh Lot-I BESS Program
These projects are part of NTPC’s Lot-I BESS deployment, which covers a total capacity of approximately 2,334 MWh (≈2.3 GWh) across multiple thermal power plants.
Other developers awarded capacity under the same program include:
- NTPC GE Power Services – 400 MWh (Barh, Bihar)
- Pace Digitek – 400 MWh (Nabinagar, Bihar)
- Enrich Energy – 290 MWh (Simhadri, Andhra Pradesh)
Focus on Grid Stability and Peak Demand Management
These projects involve deployment of grid-scale battery energy storage systems at thermal power plants, enabling better load management and flexible power dispatch.
By integrating BESS with conventional power plants, NTPC aims to:
- Enhance grid stability and reliability
- Support peak load management
- Enable smoother integration of renewable energy sources
Project Execution Model and Timeline
All projects have been awarded under the EPC model, covering complete project delivery from engineering and procurement to installation and commissioning, along with long-term maintenance.
- Awards Announced: March 2026
- Execution Period: 15–18 months
- Maintenance Period: Up to 11 years (project-specific)
The award of these BESS projects marks a significant step in NTPC’s strategy to modernize its thermal fleet by integrating energy storage solutions, paving the way for a more flexible and resilient power system.
