NTPC Green Energy Secures 200 MW/800 MWh BESS Capacity in West Bengal

NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a part of NTPC Limited, has emerged as the successful bidder in the e-reverse auction which was conducted by West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for developing the standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in West Bengal.

The tender was floated by WBSEDCL for the development of 500 MW/2,000 MWh of standalone BESS capacity in the state. The procurement process was conducted through a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism.

Under the terms outlined in the Request for Selection (RfS), NTPC Green Energy Limited has secured 200 MW/800 MWh of the total BESS capacity offered through the tender.

The company secured the capacity at a discovered tariff of ₹4.35 lakh per MW per month following the e-reverse auction process.

The successful bid strengthens NTPC Green Energy Limited’s presence in the battery energy storage segment and adds to its portfolio of projects supporting the development of energy storage infrastructure.

The e-reverse auction is part of WBSEDCL’s initiative to procure standalone BESS capacity through a competitive bidding process. The selected capacity will be developed in West Bengal, supporting the state’s efforts to expand its energy storage capabilities.

The procurement of standalone BESS capacity is aimed at strengthening the availability of energy storage infrastructure and supporting the evolving requirements of the power sector. Through the competitive bidding route, WBSEDCL is facilitating the development of the planned 500 MW/2,000 MWh capacity in the state.

NTPC Green Energy Limited’s successful bid for 200 MW/800 MWh represents a significant share of the capacity tendered by WBSEDCL and further positions the company in the emerging standalone battery energy storage market.

As the energy sector increasingly incorporates renewable power generation, standalone battery energy storage systems are gaining importance in supporting the flexibility and evolving requirements of electricity networks. The West Bengal tender is part of this broader development of energy storage capacity through competitive procurement.

The project capacity secured by NGEL under the tender comprises 200 MW of power capacity and 800 MWh of energy storage capacity, with the discovered tariff determined at ₹4.35 lakh per MW per month.
