OMC Power and Honda have joined forces to commission a distributed renewable energy-based UPS system that uses repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries for stationary energy storage. This project is the first on-ground execution of Honda Motor Co. Ltd.’s strategic investment in India’s distributed power solutions business. It follows a similar initiative in Pune in 2024, carried out by JSW Group (MG Motors) and Vision Mechatronics.
Reliable Power for Areas with Weak Grid
The UPS system is designed for locations where grid power is irregular or unreliable. It provides uninterrupted, low-emission electricity by combining distributed renewable energy generation with advanced battery storage. By reusing EV batteries from electric two- and three-wheelers, the project extends battery life and helps solve last-mile power reliability issues.
Rohit Chandra, Co-Founder & CEO of OMC Power, said, “The commissioning of this project in Hardoi marks a decisive shift from pilot to scale. This is a distributed UPS solution built for India’s power realities, where the combination of reliability and availability makes power significantly more dependable. By repurposing EV batteries, we are creating a scalable, storage-led energy model that can be rapidly deployed across telecom infrastructure, healthcare facilities, MSMEs, and institutions in geographies needing reliable power. This strengthens our go-to-market strategy as we move towards our 1 GWp decentralised clean energy ambition.”
Reducing Diesel Dependence
The system is engineered to provide round-the-clock backup power, reducing reliance on diesel generators. It is particularly suitable for telecom towers, hospitals, schools, small and medium enterprises, and other local businesses. By combining clean energy generation with repurposed battery storage, the solution offers an environmentally sustainable and commercially viable alternative to conventional backup systems.
A Step Toward Scaling EaaS
This commissioning marks the first operational milestone under the Honda–OMC strategic partnership announced in October 2025. It also represents Honda’s first global investment in India’s distributed power and UPS sector, expanding its electrification efforts beyond mobility to community and infrastructure-level energy resilience.
OMC Power runs more than 500 smart mini-grids that power telecom towers and rooftops of institutions. The company is also working on one of the biggest solarization projects for sustainable healthcare in Uttar Pradesh. It will cover more than 130 hospitals and medical colleges using the RESCO model. OMC Power and Honda want to spread storage-based Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) and distributed UPS solutions to areas and industries where reliable power can make things run more smoothly.
