Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has completely commissioned its transmission system designed to evacuate power from 20 GW of renewable energy zones (REZ) in Rajasthan. The project, titled Transmission System for Evacuation of Power from REZ in Rajasthan (20 GW) under Phase-III Part-C1, became operational on 22 September 2026, according to the company’s regulatory disclosure. POWERGRID received the Date of Commercial Operation (DOCO) notification on 11 October 2026.
Project Connects Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zones to the Grid
The project forms part of the transmission infrastructure required to integrate large-scale renewable energy generation from Rajasthan into the wider electricity network. As solar and wind capacity expands, adequate transmission infrastructure is essential to move electricity from generation centres to the grid and support its reliable integration into the power system.
The project includes a new 765/400 kV substation at Ramgarh, equipped with a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for voltage management. It also comprises a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting Ramgarh to Bhadla-III, along with associated bay extension works at existing substations in Rajasthan. These components are intended to strengthen the network’s ability to handle power flows from renewable energy-rich areas.
The project was awarded through the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route. POWERGRID had acquired the project special-purpose vehicle (SPV), initially named Ramgarh II Transmission Limited, in October 2023 to implement the transmission scheme.
Subsidiary Restructuring
The project was initially entrusted to POWERGRID Ramgarh II Transmission Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of POWERGRID. Following a corporate restructuring, the subsidiary was amalgamated with POWERGRID Vataman Transmission Limited with effect from 1 March 2026, pursuant to an order issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on 27 January 2026.
The commissioning marks the completion of another transmission asset supporting renewable energy integration in Rajasthan. The company’s disclosure confirms the project’s commissioning status; however, it does not specify the total investment or expected revenue contribution in the announcement.
POWERGRID Also Commissions Bidar Solar Transmission Project
POWERGRID recently announced the commissioning of the Transmission Scheme for Solar Energy Zone in Bidar (2,500 MW), Karnataka, effective 5 October 2026. The project is designed to support the evacuation of solar power from the Bidar solar energy zone.
The Rajasthan and Bidar projects add to the transmission infrastructure being developed to connect renewable energy generation zones with India’s electricity grid.
