SAIC MG has begun deliveries of the MG4 ‘Anxin Edition’, marking the first delivery of a mass-market electric vehicle equipped with a semi-solid-state battery in China. The development follows the launch of the all-new MG4 at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, where SAIC MG described the model as “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle.
Although the previous-generation MG4 Electric has been on sale since 2022 and achieved strong popularity in Europe, SAIC unveiled a completely new generation MG4 in March 2025, earlier than expected. The accelerated update was partly driven by the limited performance of the MG4 and the MG Motor brand in the Chinese market. The new MG4 is positioned as MG’s first global model, targeting customers in China, other Asian markets, and Europe.
While the new MG4 has not yet launched in Europe, where it is scheduled to debut next year—sales in China began in late summer. At launch, SAIC MG surprised the market by offering the MG4 in five variants instead of the four initially announced. The fifth variant, known as the ‘Anxin Edition’ or ‘Secure Edition’, features a semi-solid-state battery supplied by QingTao Energy, a battery startup in which SAIC invested several years ago.
Semi-solid-state batteries, which contain significantly less liquid electrolyte than conventional lithium-ion batteries, are considered an intermediate step toward full solid-state technology. SAIC MG said the battery reduces liquid electrolyte content to just 5%, significantly lowering combustion risks and improving battery cycle life. The company said that in two needle penetration tests, the battery produced “no smoke, no fire, and no explosion after two hours,” calling it an “industry first” that exceeds existing standards by 20%.
The semi-solid-state MG4 is powered by a 53.95 kWh manganese-based battery, delivering a CLTC range of 530 km. The vehicle uses a single front-mounted 120 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor, producing 250 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 160 km/h. Using DC fast charging, the battery can charge from 30% to 80% in around 20–21 minutes.
The MG4 is available in five trims—Comfort, Ease, Freedom, Smart, and Secure. Entry-level variants start at 68,800 yuan, while the semi-solid-state version is priced at 102,800 yuan (under $15,000). Models with conventional lithium iron phosphate batteries are offered with 42.8 kWh and 53.95 kWh options. Prices in Europe are expected to be significantly higher due to export costs and import duties, with the current-generation MG4 Electric starting at €34,990 in Germany.
In terms of dimensions, the new MG4 measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, placing it close in size to the BYD Dolphin. The vehicle features a tech-focused interior, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 cockpit chip, with screen sizes ranging from 12.8 inches to 15.6 inches depending on the variant.
SAIC MG reported deliveries of more than 13,000 MG4 units in November, reinforcing the model’s importance to the brand. The company described itself as a “beacon of Chinese automotive success” in overseas markets, particularly in the EU and the UK, where MG remains one of the best-selling independent Chinese car brands.
