Tamil Nadu Extends 100% Road Tax Exemption for Electric vehicles Until 2027

Tamil Nadu Extends 100% Road Tax Exemption for Electric vehicles Until 2027

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a two-year extension of its 100% road tax exemption for all battery-operated vehicles, effective from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027, in a move aimed at sustaining the state’s momentum in promoting clean mobility and supporting domestic EV manufacturing. The decision was formalized through a government order issued on 29 December 2025.

The extension covers both transport and non-transport categories of electric vehicles and comes in response to requests from EV manufacturers and industry representatives seeking continued policy support to maintain growth in the state’s EV ecosystem. According to official estimates, EV penetration in Tamil Nadu has reached approximately 7.8% in 2025, reflecting substantial progress in the adoption of electric two-wheelers, delivery fleets, and commercial vehicles, while passenger car uptake remains relatively slower. Last year, 1.66 lakh EVs were registered across all segments in the state.

The road tax exemption, first introduced under the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy, 2019, was initially valid until December 31, 2022, and was subsequently extended until 2025. The current two-year extension aligns with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy, 2023, following recommendations from the Transport Commissioner and industry stakeholders. The Commissioner has also been directed to submit a comprehensive assessment on the potential impact of imposing taxes on EVs, taking into account practices in other Indian states.

The road tax constitutes a significant portion of the upfront cost of vehicles. For EV buyers, particularly in the two-wheeler and compact car segments, the exemption reduces the financial burden and incentivizes wider adoption.

A government spokesperson stated, “Extending the 100% road tax exemption demonstrates Tamil Nadu’s commitment to fostering a self-sustaining EV ecosystem and supporting the growth of domestic electric mobility manufacturing.”

With this latest extension, Tamil Nadu continues to reinforce its position as a leading EV hub in India, providing both consumers and manufacturers with long-term incentives to accelerate the transition toward cleaner, sustainable transportation solutions.
