Tata Power Breaks Ground on 800 MW Renewable Energy Project in Andhra Pradesh with Integrated BESS

Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commenced construction of an 800 MW renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, combining 400 MW of wind and 400 MW of solar, with an integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) to support a reliable, round-the-clock clean power supply.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh Minister for IT, Electronics & Communications, HRD & RTG, along with Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD of Tata Power, senior government officials and company executives.

The project includes a 400 MW wind farm at Kanekallu in Anantapur district and a 400 MW solar project at Pattikonda in Kurnool district. While TPREL will develop the wind project, Suzlon has secured the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the wind component.

As part of the overall development, 400 MW will be executed for NTPC, including a 200 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project integrated with a 25 MW/50 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The remaining 200 MW solar capacity has been reserved for future allocation.

The project has secured 800 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity through the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL substations, enabling power generated from the project to be transmitted through the national grid.

Being developed under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, the project is expected to attract significant renewable energy investments while supporting industrial development in the state. The project will span nearly 3,462 acres, including around 2,700 acres for solar installations and 760 acres for wind infrastructure.

Commenting on the development, Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, said the project represents a major milestone in the company’s clean energy journey and will contribute to reliable, round-the-clock renewable power through the integration of solar, wind and energy storage technologies.

Girish Tanti, Co-founder of Suzlon Group, said the project further strengthens Suzlon’s long-standing partnership with Tata Power Renewables. He noted that the two companies have now crossed the 1 GW collaboration milestone, while highlighting Andhra Pradesh’s target of achieving over 72 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and Net Zero by 2047.

Nara Lokesh said the project reflects Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to building a world-class clean energy ecosystem through progressive policies, infrastructure development and strategic partnerships that support sustainable industrial growth.

The project aligns with Tata Power’s goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2045. The company currently has a renewable energy portfolio of 17.7 GW, including operational and under-construction projects, further strengthening its position in India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy and battery storage sector.
