The World Bank Group and the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) organized a day-long workshop for utilities and government officials on the topic “Future Business Models for BESS Implementation in India” on 4th December 2025 at The Imperial, New Delhi. This advisory engagement is funded by the European Union under the Accelerating Climate-Smart & Inclusive Infrastructure in South Asia (ACSIIS) program.
The workshop facilitated targeted, in-depth discussions among key stakeholders on emerging business models for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), addressing barriers such as high costs, regulatory uncertainties, and integration challenges in India’s grid. The event aimed to encourage discussions on identifying real use cases of BESS, understanding different value streams, and assessing its real-world applicability in the transmission and distribution systems.
Participants also explored approaches for monetization of excess power generation to enhance the viability of BESS projects, along with deliberations on various business models and BESS operations for daily arbitrage, ancillary market participation, and other practical use cases based on project configuration.
The workshop served as a key platform for advancing dialogue on innovative and practical solutions to support India’s evolving energy storage landscape.
