Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, has significantly expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity at Khavda in Gujarat, taking the total capacity to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from 3.55 GWh in June 2026. The expansion marks an increase of 3.08 GWh in operational storage capacity and strengthens the company’s energy storage infrastructure at the Khavda renewable energy park.
Following this expansion, AGEL now accounts for more than 50% of India’s total operational BESS capacity, which stands at approximately 12.6 GWh. The development also places Khavda among the world’s largest battery energy storage installations, with the site now recognised as the world’s largest operational battery storage installation at a single location. The increased storage capacity is expected to support the integration of renewable power, improve energy availability and provide greater flexibility in managing electricity supply from renewable energy sources.
AGEL achieved the 6.63 GWh milestone within 14 months of commencing on-site BESS construction at Khavda, Gujarat with this latest capacity addition being commissioned in just 10 months from the start of its construction.
The BESS is integrated with AGEL’s renewable energy (RE) development at Khavda, where the company is developing a 30 GW RE plant across 538 square kilometers of barren land.
The 6.63 GWh BESS installation at Khavda has the capacity to store enough clean electricity to meet the daily power requirements of approximately two million households. It can also support peak electricity demand in cities such as Nagpur, Patna or Visakhapatnam for several hours, highlighting the potential of large-scale battery storage in meeting urban power requirements during periods of high consumption.
In terms of storage capacity, the installation is equivalent to the battery capacity of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles (EVs). Its daily energy storage potential is also estimated to be nearly twice the Delhi Metro’s daily electricity consumption, demonstrating the scale of the project and its ability to store substantial volumes of renewable electricity.
The expansion to 6.63 GWh is expected to strengthen renewable energy integration into the electricity grid by enabling surplus clean power to be stored and dispatched when required. This will help address the intermittent nature of solar and wind generation, support electricity supply during peak demand periods and improve grid flexibility through large-scale energy storage infrastructure.
Sagar Adani, Executive Director, Adani Green Energy, said, “Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India’s clean energy transition.
At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it. As India’s power demand grows, we will continue to scale energy storage solutions, both, battery and pumped storage to support a more resilient, lower-carbon grid.”
