The Andhra Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (APTRANSCO) has created a plan to strengthen the State’s power transmission network. It will launch 55 major transmission projects with an investment of ₹9,319.30 crore.
The initiative aims to meet the State’s increasing electricity demand. It also seeks to improve grid reliability and prepare the transmission system for future industrial growth and the integration of large-scale renewable energy.
Major Capacity and Network Expansion Planned
According to APTRANSCO officials, the proposed projects will add 8,853 MVA of transformation capacity to the State grid. In addition, the transmission network will expand with the construction of 1,558 circuit kilometres of new high-voltage transmission lines. This will improve power flow across regions.
The expansion will help reduce congestion, improve voltage stability, and ensure a steady power supply to rapidly growing urban, industrial, and coastal areas.
Key Infrastructure Highlights
The transmission expansion plan includes the development of several new substations and grid assets at strategic locations across Andhra Pradesh. Key components include:
- ₹9,319.30 crore investment across 55 transmission projects
- 8,853 MVA additional transformation capacity
- 1,558 circuit km of new transmission lines
- New 400 kV, 220 kV and 132 kV substations at Kakinada SEZ, Achutapuram, Gudivada and Ainavalli
These substations are expected to support industrial clusters, ports, special economic zones, and regional load centres.
Battery Energy Storage Systems in Two Phases
In a move towards grid modernisation, APTRANSCO has also planned the installation of 1,500 MW / 3,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to be implemented in two phases. The storage systems will help manage peak demand, balance variable renewable energy, and enhance grid resilience.
Strengthening an Extensive Existing Network
APTRANSCO currently operates a vast transmission infrastructure comprising 380 substations, 1,030 transformers, and over 33,000 circuit kilometres of transmission lines across the State.
The new transmission projects are aligned with APTRANSCO’s broader objective of ensuring “24×7 reliable power”, accelerating grid modernisation, and building future-ready energy infrastructure to support Andhra Pradesh’s long-term economic and clean energy goals.
