Global private investment firm Ardian has acquired a majority stake in Munich Electrification, a leading independent battery technology company, to support its global expansion in battery management systems (BMS), electric mobility, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The investment will provide fresh capital to accelerate the company’s growth strategy across existing and emerging applications, including data centres, non-road mobile machinery, automation, robotics, and defence. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals, while the founders will retain a minority stake and the existing management team will continue to lead the business.
Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Munich, Germany, Munich Electrification develops battery management systems, electronics, sensor technologies, and software for electric vehicles, commercial vehicles, passenger cars, and utility-scale energy storage systems. The company employs around 300 people and has established itself as a key supplier to automotive OEMs, Tier-1 manufacturers, and BESS system integrators across Europe and the United States.
The company’s battery technology platform combines proprietary hardware and software with modular system architecture, enabling scalable and customised solutions for a wide range of applications. Series production is carried out through manufacturing partners in Europe, with expansion into the United States planned. Munich Electrification’s leadership team brings industry experience from companies including Tesla, Daimler, BMW, Audi, Continental, and Bosch.
As part of the investment, Ardian will provide additional capital to support Munich Electrification’s product development, geographic expansion, and diversification into adjacent markets. Alongside its organic growth strategy, the company plans to pursue selective acquisitions to strengthen its position in sectors such as non-road mobile machinery, data centres, drones, defence, automation, and robotics.
Commenting on the partnership, Georg-Friedrich Graf, CEO of Munich Electrification, said the company has grown into one of Europe’s leading independent battery technology providers over the past decade. He noted that Ardian’s industrial expertise, European roots, and global network would help accelerate the company’s expansion into new markets and applications.
Max Dolata, Managing Director, Expansion at Ardian, said battery management systems are the “brain” of modern batteries and that Munich Electrification’s proprietary technology is well positioned to benefit from the global shift towards electrification and utility-scale energy storage. He added that the investment will support the company’s innovation pipeline and international growth ambitions.
The investment underscores the growing demand for advanced battery management technologies as electrification accelerates across transportation, energy storage, and industrial applications. With Ardian’s backing, Munich Electrification aims to strengthen its global footprint while supporting the development of next-generation battery solutions for electric mobility and grid-scale energy storage
