Breathe Raises $21 Million to Accelerate Launch of Advanced Battery Software Solutions

London-based battery management software firm Breathe Battery Technologies has secured $21 million in Series B funding to propel the launch of new software tools designed to build better-performing batteries. The funding round was backed by new investor Kinnevik AB, along with returning investors Lowercarbon Capital and Volvo Cars Tech Fund.

Spun out from Imperial College London in 2019, Breathe develops advanced battery software and services that support the design, simulation, and optimization of batteries across their entire development lifecycle. The company’s offerings include embedded software and physics-based simulation tools aimed at improving performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness for battery manufacturers and electric vehicle (EV) developers.

As part of its expansion, Breathe unveiled three new products:

    • Breathe Model – a physics-based cell simulation tool that enables high-fidelity modeling of electrochemical and thermal battery behavior.
    • Breathe Map – a battery performance mapping service that helps manufacturers unlock optimal charging capabilities based on internal battery states.
    • Breathe Design (upcoming) – a system-level battery design platform aimed at enabling engineers to build more efficient and cost-effective energy storage systems.

The fresh capital will be used to scale up operations, expand the company’s London battery testing facility, and further enhance its physics-driven software solutions.

Commenting on the company’s mission, Dr. Ian Campbell, CEO of Breathe, said:

“Breathe has evolved to become a leading company in battery technology, with the funding and infrastructure to match our ambition and deliver a major impact on battery innovation. The industry can no longer afford incremental progress; it needs transformative technology that makes batteries fundamentally better. Our software toolchain improves EV charging for end-users and helps manufacturers cut costs, reduce risk, and accelerate battery system development.”

The investment comes shortly after Volvo Cars announced plans to integrate Breathe’s embedded charging software, Breathe Charge, into its upcoming ES90 electric sedan. The tool dynamically manages internal electrochemical states to optimize real-time charging performance.

Ann-Sofie Ekberg, CEO of Volvo Cars Tech Fund, noted:

“Charging isn’t just about being fast or slow anymore, it’s about delivering a consistent experience that makes EV ownership effortless for customers. Breathe’s technology enables us to optimise charging across a wide spectrum of real-world conditions, improving speed and consistency while protecting battery health. Breathe’s software and expertise give us critical insights earlier in the development, allowing us to make more informed decisions, reduce risk, and ultimately create more efficient battery systems.”

Breathe’s latest developments mark a significant step toward enabling smarter, safer, and more efficient energy storage systems, as the global demand for electrification and battery performance continues to rise.
