Brookfield Unveils Lumara Platform, Commits $600 Million to Scale Renewable Energy and BESS Projects in India

Global asset manager Brookfield has launched Lumara, a dedicated renewable energy platform in India, with a planned investment of $600 million (around ₹5,737 crore) to accelerate the development of solar, wind and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. The platform will start operations with a development portfolio of over 6 GW, reinforcing Brookfield’s long-term commitment to India’s clean energy transition.

Lumara has been established to address key bottlenecks that often delay renewable energy projects, including challenges related to power purchase agreements (PPAs), grid connectivity and land acquisition. The platform will primarily support projects that have already secured land and grid access, enabling construction to commence before long-term PPAs are finalised. This approach is expected to shorten project timelines and improve execution efficiency.

Along with project development, Lumara will provide credit and financing solutions to renewable energy developers, helping them accelerate project execution and expand their development pipelines. By improving access to flexible capital, the platform aims to support India’s rapidly growing demand for renewable energy and energy storage infrastructure.

Commenting on the launch, Nawal Saini, Managing Partner and Head of Energy for South Asia and the Middle East at Brookfield, said India continues to be one of the world’s most attractive renewable energy markets, driven by its target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. He added that Lumara will help meet the increasing demand for clean electricity from commercial and industrial consumers, data centre operators and government utilities by delivering reliable long-term renewable energy solutions.

Lumara is backed by Brookfield’s Catalytic Transition Fund, which invests in clean energy and energy transition opportunities across emerging markets. The platform will operate independently with a dedicated management team overseeing project development, capital deployment and asset management, while complementing Brookfield’s existing renewable energy operations in India.

Brookfield currently has a combined 45 GW portfolio of operational and under-development wind and solar assets in India. Globally, the company manages more than $1 trillion in assets across over 30 countries and has invested more than $32 billion in India across infrastructure, real estate, energy and private equity sectors.

The launch of Lumara is expected to strengthen the country’s renewable energy ecosystem by accelerating project deployment, improving financing access and supporting the integration of battery energy storage systems as India advances toward its clean energy and grid reliability goals
